2026 – The Journey Continues – God has a Plan and Purpose for Our Lives – Part XX

Television watching helps fill the void during the day. Remarkable among programs is the BBC’s Call the Midwife, a look at the British socialized medicine, a retrospective since the 1940s delivering many babies among the poor dock workers and their families. The Anglican nuns play a vital role at Nonnatus House and go deeply into their vocations, which is my point. Despite their differences with Catholic doctrine, their devotion to the way of life with silence and prayer after Compline (night prayers) as their featured Liturgy of the Hours moment.

They stay busy, using their bicycles to get around to the poor living in substandard housing. In an episode, a postulant contemplated initially taking vows and expressed a deeper abiding faith in God, that was her everything. All religious, despite their belief system, share a common bond in that they found their vocation to their faith in Jesus.

I invited the pastor of my church to my house to hear my confession. He gave me absolution and the anointing of the sick and told me about a young cancer victim, Megan, who suffered and died in her late 30s. She inspired so many that he believed her to be in heaven and could be an inspiration to me. I’ll invoke Megan as among the saints to intercede before Jesus for my healing and I would be an inspiration to many.

I am just beginning this hospice journey and expect lots of excitement along the way. We have lots of family and friends to rely on, to bring meals and three of my five sons assist in bathing me. I text funny quips to all my kids. Ashley and Jack drive me around to my wife’s appointments. There’s tension, yet an overriding unity among family members.

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”. Philippians 4:13

    Joe,
I am so sorry you are going through this. You are a good man and I enjoyed working with you at Piedmont. I will always remember your kindness in taking me to lunch when I was leaving. God is with you now and forever. I know you believe.
